Free GM 1724 label generator for General Motors shipping labels.
GM 1724 labels identify containers of parts shipped to GM, with a Code 128 license plate and a 2D barcode. Fill in TEC-IT's template and print it.
How to print a GM 1724 label
-
01
Pick type and revision
Choose 1724-A for one container, 1724-B for a pallet of one part number or 1724-C for mixed parts, in your GM plant's revision.
-
02
Copy GM's data
Take plant/dock, material handling code and reference from GM's delivery schedule (DELJIT) or forecast (DELFOR), part number and quantity from the order. Each container gets its own serial.
-
03
Print two at actual size
Set Copies to 2 and print the PDF at 100%, black on white. Apply them to opposite sides, in North America at the upper right.
What is a GM 1724 label?
GM 1724 is General Motors' shipping and parts identification label for containers of production parts. It tells the receiving plant what a container holds, where it goes and which license plate identifies it. TEC-IT's 13 templates cover 1724-A, its small-container format, 1724-B and 1724-C, plus two GM Europe labels.
What TEC-IT's 2020 1724-A template prints
Addresses, plant/dock code and the Data Matrix share the top band. Quantity, reference and material handling code follow, then the 44-point part number beside the FIFO date. Below sit the license plate, container type, gross weight, delivery note and GM's pass-through text; GM's supplier area at the bottom left stays free.
You enter plain values. The template adds each data identifier (DI), such as P for the part number, and builds the Data Matrix as in GM's 2018 example.
What GM requires on each container
GM's packaging requirements for North America (GM 1738NA, December 2019) make two labels mandatory on every container, 5 in below its top and ending 1 in before its right edge. Handwritten data is prohibited, and mixed pallets need the mixed-load label.
GM's 2018 template requires bar codes of ISO/IEC 15415 grade C or better at the point of receipt. Under GM 1738NA, they must be checked regularly for easy, accurate scanning. Poorly printed labels and unscannable barcodes, the template warns, reflect on your company.
Labels for every container of a shipment
Without signing in, you fill in one label at a time, and Copies prints its twin for the opposite side. For a shipment, a free sign-in opens data sheets: one row per container, serials filled in as a sequence.
For series production, TFORMer Server takes print jobs from SAP or Oracle; TFORMer Workstation fills a layout from Excel or CSV records. Fields the templates lack, such as an expiration date for parts with dispensed material, need a layout of your own in TFORMer Designer.

What to check before shipping to GM
- License plate. GM's 2018 revision asks for bars at least 16.5 mm high and 6.3 mm clear at each end. The 2020 1724-A prints 13 mm bars. TEC-IT's 4 × 6 in templates leave about 6 mm left of the bars and 3–6 mm right of them, up to a printed line.
- Capitals. GM specifies uppercase bold fonts; the templates print lowercase as typed, so type in capitals.
- Data Matrix date. TEC-IT's 2020 templates and its 2018 1724-A and 1724-A-KLT currently encode every year from 2000 to 2099 as 2020 (DI 6D); the printed date is as entered.
GM 1724 next to related labels
GM calls 1724-A its individual AIAG shipping label; TEC-IT's AIAG B-10 templates use Code 39 barcodes, no 2D symbol.
TEC-IT's Ford GTL templates add separate Code 128 barcodes, such as the supplier code, to a PDF417.
The 2010 Global Transport Label standard drew on GM 1724 and the Odette label; TEC-IT's OTL 1 templates use Code 39 on A5.
What goes in each field of the 2020 1724-A template
TEC-IT's template prints no field numbers; 1–13 follow the markers on the image above. Captions appear as printed or, where nothing prints, as the editor's caption. Max. gives the limits of GM's 2018 revision, the latest public one. The Barcode column names the symbol and data identifier (DI).
| No. | Field | Caption on the label | Content | Barcode | Max. length |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ship from | FROM: | Your company and shipping address in four lines, then an optional phone or e-mail line (Contact) and the country of origin, printed after MADE IN. GM also allows ASY IN, which the template cannot print. | — | 4 lines |
| 2 | Ship to | TO: | Name and address of the receiving GM plant, as in the order. | — | 4 lines |
| 3 | Plant/dock | PLANT/DOCK: | Plant and dock code from PCI segment 12Z of GM's DELJIT shipping schedule; without it, the plant from NAD+ST and the dock from LOC+11. Longer codes print smaller. | Data Matrix (DI 21L) | 14 |
| 4 | Quantity | QUANTITY: | Parts in the container, in pieces, matching the order. | Data Matrix (DI Q) | — |
| 5 | Reference | REFERENCE: | Purchase order or Kanban number, where GM's DELFOR asks for one; otherwise leave it empty. | Data Matrix (DI K or 15K) | 8 |
| — | Reference type | Reference Type (ORDER, KANBAN) | ORDER bar-codes the reference as a purchase order (DI K), KANBAN as a Kanban number (DI 15K). Nothing prints; with a reference set, other words are rejected. | — | — |
| 6 | Material handling code | MATERIAL HANDLING CODE: | Delivery location in the plant, also called DLOC. The receiving plant sends it by electronic data interchange (EDI), in PCI segment 11Z or LOC+159. | Data Matrix (DI 20L) | 12 |
| 7 | Part number | PART NUMBER: | GM part number, typically eight digits, exactly as in the order. | Data Matrix (DI P) | 8 |
| — | Safety sign | Safety Sign (1=yes / 0=no) | 1 prints a circle with a triangle at the right end of the part number field, for parts the drawing marks as critical; 0 prints nothing. | — | — |
| 8 | FIFO date | FIFO DATE: | Day, month (JAN–DEC) and year in three inputs, printed as 24SEP above 2020. The template computes the barcode date itself, but currently encodes every year from 2000 to 2099 as 2020; it ignores the extra FIFODateYYYYMMDD input. | Data Matrix (DI 6D, qualifier 011) | 2 + 3 + 4 |
| 9 | License plate | LICENSE PLATE (1J): | UN and the nine-digit D-U-N-S number of your shipping site in the first input, a serial of up to nine characters in the second. Never repeat a serial within a year. The template prints 13 mm bars with a 0.33 mm module. | Code 128 and Data Matrix (DI 1J) | UN + 9, serial 9 |
| 10 | Container type | CONTAINER TYPE: | Container code your GM plant specifies, as in the PAC segment of its EDI, such as SC151208. | Data Matrix (DI B) | 8 |
| 11 | Gross weight | GROSS WEIGHT: | Container and parts in whole kilograms; the template adds KG. | Data Matrix (DI 7Q, unit GT) | — |
| 12 | Delivery note or PUS number | DELIVERY NOTE or PUS NUMBER: | Your delivery note number, GM's pick-up sheet (PUS) number where one applies, or the invoice number for intercontinental shipments. In the editor, the input is called ShipmentID. | Data Matrix (DI 2S) | — |
| 13 | PCI text | PCI CodeValue Z13 | Three lines, inputs Z13, Z15 and Z17, for the text GM sends in PCI segments 13Z, 15Z and 17Z of the DELJIT. GM wants it printed as received. | — | — |
All GM 1724 templates
Revisions 2020 and 2018 carry a Data Matrix, as GM's templates have since version 2018-01 of March 2018. The 2020 ones print a FIFO date where the 2018 1724-A and 1724-B print the shipment date. GM's 2020 revision is not public: confirm its details with your GM plant. The templates TEC-IT dates 2001 and the GM Europe labels carry a PDF417. On their 1724-A and KLT labels it is about 12 mm high; GM's 1724-A templates of 2010–2015 asked for 25.4 mm ± 5.08 mm, including a 1 mm quiet zone.
