How to create a phone number QR code

Enter the number in + format
Type +, the country code, then the number without the trunk prefix (0 in Austria): TEC-IT's (07252) 72720 becomes +43725272720. Hyphens may separate the groups; spaces may not.

Set the print size
Keep QR Code for phone cameras; under Settings, set 300 dpi and Module width 5 Pixel, 0.42 mm per module. The image has no margin, so leave 4 modules clear around it.

What a phone number QR code holds
A phone number QR code holds one link: tel: and the number, in the URI scheme of RFC 3966. For TEC-IT in Steyr, that is tel:+43725272720. Callers scan instead of typing digits, and no server stands between code and number: the code works as long as the number does.
Hotlines on machines, vans, packaging and signs
Beside the type plate of a machine, lift or vending terminal, the code gives whoever spots a fault the service hotline, with no manual to search. Vans and trailers carry the dispatch number, packaging and inserts the customer line, flyers and shop signs the order or booking line.
Customers and field technicians scan it with their own phone cameras. Where equipment or goods travel abroad, the + format matters most: it leaves the international prefix to the caller's phone.
No typing, and the label space a call QR code needs
ITU-T E.123 notes that a number works only when entered exactly. The code takes the typing away: Google's Ads help says scanning its call QR code opens a smartphone's dialer with the number filled in.
How you write the number sets the size. At 0.4233 mm per module, the sample needs 12.28 mm with its quiet zone (21 × 21 modules). Written as 0043(7252)72720, the same number needs 13.97 mm (25 × 25).
Image formats, data sheets and TEC-IT software

Mistakes that misdirect callers
- The trunk prefix kept after the country code. In +43 07252 72720, the 0 is Austria's trunk prefix, which ITU-T E.164 says must not be dialled from abroad: drop it.
- A freephone number on exported equipment. RFC 3966 notes that national freephone numbers are not necessarily reachable from abroad; add a number that is.
- No number in print. RFC 3966 warns that a link's text can hide where it calls; print the number beside the code.

Does a QR code to call a number dial on its own?
It must not: RFC 3966 forbids web clients and similar tools to place a call from a
tel: link without the user's explicit consent. Apple's and Google's camera guides show a link to tap; Google's Ads help says its call QR code opens the dialer, number filled in.
Should I write 00 or + before the country code?
Write +. ITU-T E.123 uses + to remind callers to dial their own international prefix, which differs by country. The ITU lists 00 for Austria and Germany, but 011 for the USA and Canada. RFC 3966 also counts a number without + as local.
Why does my code read tel:tel: instead of tel:?
Because the data already started with tel:, typed into the field or kept in a data sheet. The generator writes tel: in front of whatever it receives, so it appears twice and the link no longer fits RFC 3966. Enter the number alone, starting with +.
Can I change the number after printing?
No: the number sits in the code itself, so a new hotline number means new labels. In return, the code depends on no web service that could fail. Print a number that will last, such as a central service line.
